Mother’s Day is right around the corner, and my husband has been asking me what I might want to do. I can tell you I don’t like heading to restaurants on Mother’s Day – they are way too busy. Crazy busy. I have a few stories of Mother’s Day restaurant brunch fails. I never feel the need to head out to a restaurant to celebrate being a mom. My kids often make me a beautiful breakfast in bed. That is a luxury that I love!

I do like hiking and when you combine a hike with a picnic – the day just got all the better! Now a hike and a picnic are two different activities – When I hike, I pack my pack with an easily portable lunch, snacks, and water. They are designed to give and sustain energy for hiking miles.
When I think of a picnic, I think of sitting in nature with a beautiful view and enjoying delicacies.
A Mother’s Day Picnic is a perfect way to spend the day! The weather in northern California is usually nice this time of year, and we are so close to many, many beautiful parks, beaches, trails, and wineries.
For Mother’s Day, I take the day off (well sort of – are we ever really off?). This is just one reason a picnic is the perfect outing – they are really easy to put together! A quick trip to a deli and, and you will have everything you need! Some great sandwiches, pasta salad, cheese, crackers, sliced fruit, waters, and a great bottle of wine. Really how easy is that?
Don’t forget the blanket (or table cloth if you know you will be somewhere with picnic tables), plates and cups (plastic of course), utensils, and the wine opener. I have a great portable picnic kit that a good friend gave me last year for my birthday. I love it! This kit combined with my soft pack cooler makes picnicking easy!
Some of my favorite places to picnic near my home are:
- Sanborn Park in Saratoga
- Carmel Beach with the dogs
- Mount Madonna with young kids to see the white deer
- Picchetti Winery in Cupertino
- Pogonip in Santa Cruz
- Pinnacles in Hollister
- Lovers Point in Pacific Grove
- Point Lobos, Monterey Coast
We are so lucky to live where we do!
Next weekend, send dad to the store, a great deli, or a sandwich shop; give the kids a list of supplies to gather; load up the car; and head on out for a Mother’s Day picnic.
