Patriotic Art for the Fourth of July

Next week I head back into the classroom to teach art as part of a Summer Arts Academy. I have been super busy planning our time together, and yesterday I picked up 100 pounds of clay! The students (aged first thru sixth grade) will be rolling, squishing, and forming various items out of clay next week. Working with the clay is almost like making mudpies – the kids love it! I can’t wait to get started back in the art room! To me an art studio is the most relaxing place to be.With the Fourth of July just a few days away, I thought I’d share some of last year’s art projects that are centered around a patriotic theme.

Lady Liberty Mixed Media

The third graders created these stunning Lady Liberties. They started with plain newspaper and the sprayed the paper with green colored water to give the paper a greenish tint. Once the paper was dried they drew and cut out their statues. They then pasted this onto a larger piece of paper. Students were given free reign of the art room in terms of what medium they wanted to use to finish the background. The choices ranged from water colors, to markers, to oil pastes, to paper collage, and even to glitter.

Flying Eagle Water Colors

The second graders followed a directed drawing lesson to create their flying eagles. They then used water color crayons two different ways to paint their birds. They finished it up with thin sharpies to add in the details.

Painted Paper Collages

The first graders spent an art period painting red, white, and, blue papers with red, white, and blue paint using a variety of items to use as “brushes”. Once the paper was dried they cut their papers into various sized shapes. Using their shapes they then created their collages. I also had the silver sparkle paper available for anyone that wanted to use some.
