A Weekend Get-Away to Capitola

Picture

Wow, time keeps on flying by. Over a month ago my husband and I celebrated our second anniversary. Honestly having been married for more than half my life, it sounds kind of silly to say, second anniversary – but that is what it is. Anyways, back to the story. Just over a month ago we celebrated with a weekend away to Capitola, CA. This is the cute little ocean town in which we got married.

Capitola is a very small beach town located where a river enters the Pacific Ocean. It sits on Monterey bay and was always a favorite beach for my children when they were little. The water in the bay at Capitola is very still – ripples of water, but no waves to worry about when you have the little ones playing at the beach.

This town is really the quintessential California beach town in that it is small, pedestrian friendly, has rows of shops, restaurants, and fun little stops all along the water’s edge. There is also a stage right on the water’s edge where bands often play. Hanging out at the water, enjoying the music, getting an ice cream next door, or a slice of pizza from Pizza my Heart – all makes for a perfect summer day!

Capitola is not only a great little beach town, it was also (as I already mentioned) where we chose to get married two years ago. All of this made it the perfect place to celebrate our second anniversary. Heading over the hill to celebrate our anniversary meant that we were going back to where our married life started. It is a special place to us!

For our anniversary weekend we stayed at the Inn at Depot Hill – also where we spent our wedding weekend.  This is a beautiful bed and breakfast a few blocks up from the water. We stayed in the Kyoto room which is has an Asian influence. I loved the private zen garden, fireplace, sunken soaking tub and all of the décor. We felt as though we were miles away from everyone else. We had our on little world just for us. You can choose to have breakfast delivered to your room or eat in the front dinning area of the Inn. We chose to dine in our room both mornings. This was perfect! We had the space, hung out in our robes, and enjoyed our very own private patio and fountain.

This hotel is close to the water and of course we wandered in and around Capitola. Great restaurants are everywhere. We love sitting outside for lunch at the Paradise Grill. Just perfect! Our favorite dinner restaurant is Shadowbrook, and we did celebrate our anniversary with dinner there.
Over the course of the weekend we also headed out on a bike ride – riding along the coast towards Aptos. Riding north to Santa Cruz and along Highway one to Wilder Ranch is another great bike ride in the area. There are beautiful views and flat roads.Another weekend activity that we enjoyed was hiking at Nicene Marks Park.  This is a beautiful park in the hills of Aptos. The town Aptos is just down the road. This is one of my favorite hike locations because you can hike into a waterfall. The hike to the waterfall is a bit tricky – you follow a creek for a bit of it and need to transverse the water a couple of times. But the end location at the falls is perfect for a lunch spot and worth the scrambling.

Capitola has so much to offer for a weekend getaway especially when you stay at Depot Inn.  For a romantic weekend you don’t need to go anywhere – just get lost in your own world. The town is cute – you can walk everywhere, and it is so close to hiking and biking locations.  Activities my husband and I love to do together.
