Any Easy Way to Donate Household Items #GiveBackBox

I have been busy – super busy – decluttering and re-organizing my home! Can I just tell you how much I am enjoying my “new” closet? I LOVE it! And it almost feels like I have a new wardrobe as I am wearing pieces of clothing that I had forgotten that I even owned. You know the shirt that gets hidden between too many hangers? The folded sweater that gets delegated to the bottom of the pile – but really is a great piece? It is like I have been reunited with a few of my long lost friends.

Then on the other had, I have also purged. I have filled bags, giant bags, of items that have been hauled of to our local charities. But I gotta’ admit, the trunk of my car was completely filled by three of these bags for weeks. For weeks I drove with the bags in the back of my car to and from work – but not ever having the time to stop and deliver the donations! Yes, life is super busy and after work, with after-school activities, grocery shopping, dinners to be made, etc – I could not always find the time – or maybe I just really didn’t have the energy to make one more stop. For whatever the reason, the bags sat in my car taking up valuable real estate.

Then I heard of this easy way to make donations, and I knew that I needed to learn more. Did you know that you can have items picked up at your door and shipped to Goodwill for free? F-R-E-E! Yes, you can! All you need to do is to box it up! And if you are like me, you have one or two boxes from Christmas shipping still lying around. Or maybe you do a lot of your shopping online like I do. All of those boxes? Guess what? You can give them a second life by using them to box up and ship off your donations.

All you need to do is to fill your empty cardboard box with the household items that you would like to donate, print out a label, schedule a pick up, and they will be picked up at your door and delivered to Goodwill. How easy is that?!? Of course you can also deliver it yourself as well.

I had the opportunity to chat with Lorie Marrero, author of the best-selling books The Clutter Diet: The Skinny on Organizing Your Home and Taking Control of Your Life and The Home Office Handbook Rules of Thumb for Organizing Your Time, Information and Workspace.

I was very excited to talk to her to learn more about this easy way to donate household items and to also pick her brain on tips and tricks to help me re-org my entire home!

Lori shared some great ideas and advice! She told me how to find hidden space in my closet, how a donation station helps with the purging of items, and some useful ideas for when I finally get the courage to tackle my kitchen.

Give Back

I am working my way through a few of the closets this week. While cleaning out the front closet, I found a couple of extra coats that were no longer being used and were donated to charity. It does feel great to find extra space when items get purged.

How is your home re-organization going?

  6. I didn’t know you could do that! I still have bags full of clothes that need to be donated in the spare room, I should really get them taken to Goodwill!

  7. I’m going to have to look into this service! I normally take my items to Goodwill but this would be another option for things I want to get rid of. We’re preparing for a big move this summer, so there’s definitely things I’m cleaning out!

  8. Oh, this is so practical! I love giving away stuff I don’t use anymore thanks!

  9. I am decluttering this month too! Although I think that it is going to continue for a few months at the rate I am going…and I may have nothing leftover at the end 🙂

  10. Game Changer!!!!! This idea is beyond fabulous! Anything that helps people on the homefront and the charity front is good stuff!

  11. Great idea! And just in time for some spring cleaning. I definitely have plenty that I could give away.

  12. This is such an awesome idea. I need to declutter big time once Spring gets here.

  13. This certainly takes some of the reasons to procrastinate away. I’ll have to try this.

  14. This is a great idea! We have been decluttering since the beginning of the year and this will definitely help us on our journey!

  15. What a neat idea! You get to bless someone else’s life with good stuff, and then you get to experience a clutter-free home. I love the idea of giving back and helping other people out. I’ve been in times of need, so I know how important it is to help other people when they are in need.

  16. Excellent Idea. I’m a huge fan of de-cluttering and often have stuff to throw out that are hardly used. Thanks for sharing.

That looks hassle free and easy. Love giving back too!

  18. I love the idea of this. I still have bags of stuff for Goodwill in the trunk of my car. It’s been months!

  19. Oh my, I need this! You have got me on this cleaning spree…I have lot’s of stuff to donate after cleaning out my closet and a portion of the attic. Next weekend we’ll finish the attic, then we go downstairs to the basement. Where did all of this come from????

  20. What an awesome program. We do a major purge and donate about twice a year and it feels so good.

  21. I look forward to doing a major purge soon. I usually donate all of my stuff to the AmVets to support our veterans and they do a pick up right at your house too. FYI 😉

  22. I recently just got divorced and moved. After having spent almost a month trying to unpack everything, I decided it was time to purge. I had way too much stuff…and sadly, half of what i had previously owned didn’t come with me. While I was going through my closet, I had come to find I had various shirts that I owned 2 or 3 of that were almost exactly the same. Different brands, but almost identical. That’s when I really knew, it was time for those things to go because I’m sure at one point or another, those similar items had gotten lost in my sea of clothes aka closet and I bought similar one not even realizing I already owned something similar.

    1. Stacey says:

Moving definitely makes you purge! It is crazy to pack something up to only unpack it and get rid of it. LOL – I have been there. I am sorry to hear about the divorce. When you mentioned a new life I thought that might have been the case, since I have been through a divorce. It is a new beginning with all new possibilities. Hugs!

  23. Debra says:

I found myself doing that too! I have all sorts of clothes I had forgotten about and now they feel new again!

  24. Koninika says:

Great post! So relatable, I think all of us need to purge and donate and organize!

  25. Although I spend a lot of time traveling, I still refer to Ukraine as to my home. This year the almost everybody were donating clothes, bedsheets, blankets, kitchen utensils and food to people from the East of Ukraine, who had to leave their homes because of the war that happened.
I totally understand why you are doing this, it is truly great and inspiring!

  26. I have so much stuff to donate. I’ve been holding on until I get time to do it, but the time is obviously now. It’s not doing anyone any good being stuffed in a closet.

  27. I love the interview and I just have to mention you have a very pleasant voice. Do more interviews!
Decluttering is a big goal for me this year too.

  28. This is very cool. My closest Goodwill is near our grocery store and about 5 minutes from my house so I go there often and yet I still have more stuff to donate collecting in the garage. I love that this service is free, I’m going to have to check out the Clutter Diet, decluttering always takes me sooo long to do!

  29. Ok this is awesome. I didn’t know about this and we’ve been doing a ton of cleaning out but I just can never seem to get the stuff to the goodwill. Thank you for sharing this!

  30. Rachael Orr says:

  31. I always donate what we don’t use. Sometimes to friends with younger kids than mine, sometimes to Goodwill, or other local charities which pick up.

  32. YOU HAVE JUST CHANGED MY LIFE FOREVER. I literally have a bag in my trunk RIGHT NOW. Thank you thank you thank you!!!!!

  33. This is awesome and really convenient for me right now as I have boxes (plural) that I need to donate right now. I need to reorganize my closet as well.

  34. I hear you I have loads to donate too. I am just sorting through it as we speak!

  35. Shut the front door! I had no idea this was a thing!! I am always driving around with boxes of items to donate, waiting until I pass a drop off location. This is so much easier! I’ll be checking it out for sure. Thanks!

  36. this is AWESOME! Half the time my garage is filled with boxes needing to go to Goodwill. I’m often too lazy to put them in the car and drive there so there they sit…for months…okay maybe years? Thanks for the tips!

  37. This is such a neat idea! I have SO much stuff to donate, too.

  38. I have a lot of items to give away. I will check this out.
