My Closet Re-Organization

Well  – it has been a huge job! This purging, cleaning, and re-organizing of my master bedroom and closet. It’s taken time to get the whole shebang done – the dressers, night stands, and the overly chaotic closet.

I admit, I am still a bit behind on my self-imposed schedule. But I am catching up. What I really like about my calendar is that when I am feeling overwhelmed with the big job of re-organization of this whole home, I simple look at the calendar and see what my next task is and get to work on it. By breaking this huge endeavor into smaller chunks I can keep my eye on one small step at at time. This is so helpful to me!

I love standing in my clean closet! I love my new hangers. They take up less space, but more importantly  they keep my clothes from slipping off and falling onto the floor.

But it is amazing how messy it got in our room! When you empty everything out of the closet – the huge amounts of clothes and stuff was strewn all over the room! Every space was covered.

This is one of those projects where it gets messier – much messier – before it gets organized and cleaned again.

Taking baby steps is helping me, and a new book is helping me as well. I just started reading  The Life-changing Magic of Tidying: A Simple, Effective Way to Banish Clutter Forever by Marie Kondo. This book was recommended to me by number of my readers and I gotta say – I am so glad that I bought this book and started reading it! I have not finished it, I am about at 2/3 of the way through and it has already made a difference in how I purge and store my clothing.

What I love about Marie’s advice is that she gives us permission to purge belongings that we feel that we need to hold onto for many different reasons. Marie points out that the purpose of many items has already been fulfilled. The gift giver received joy when she gave us the gift. We received the thrill of buying an item that we later decided didn’t fit right. If the item no longer brings us joy – then it is acceptable and preferable and even necessary to share it with someone else. Give the belonging to charity and thank the item for giving you what you needed from it.

Marie has also convinced me that I need to refold all my clothing in a vertical fashion. So I have gone through my drawers and refolded all the clothing using the KonMari method. This method does not give me any additional space, but it does allow me to see everything right off when I open my drawers, rather than needing to shuffle through the folded piles.

I am still reading the book – but already, it has helped me a lot with my giant task of purging and re-organizing my home.

I am confident that I will be done with the master bedroom and bathroom by the end of this week. Next week there will be a new calendar. A calendar that does not contain a Friday night task.

  3. You have a beautiful closet, I am very happy you were able to reclaim it!

  4. Great job! It takes a lot of time and patience.

  5. I’ve been using this KonMari method for few month now, and it does make easier to organise the wardrobe. I can imagine how “frustate” it is when you have to re-organise your closet and see the mountains of clohting. I enjoy reading this post. Thanks for sharing it.

  6. I haven’t heard of the KonMari method before but it seems so efficient! Definitely want to try this out now. Also, really want to use that calendar you shared for organizing my own life; trying to be more organized this year.

  7. That is how my closet looks from time to time! In fact, it’s in dire need of some re-organizing right now.

  8. I’ve been hearing so much about that book. I have to have it.

  9. I just finished the book last week. I have gone through all of my clothes, but my kids and husband…well lets just say it looks like it is going to be a long road! I would love to get it all done super fast, but it just doesn’t seem possible with all the littles running around. But, my goal is to purge the whole house this year, we shall see how it goes!

  10. Thanks for posting this article. I love the printable calendar. It helps when trying to stay on track!

  11. It always looks like a bomb’s gone off in the room when I organize anything because the ONLY way to really do it is to take everything out and put it back better. You’re closet is really coming together!

  12. This is great! I keep hearing all about this book. Your plan looks great – thanks for sharing the calendar with us!

  13. Oh golly! That was some hard work. Well done!

    1. Stacey says:

      Thanks!

  14. You are my hero! I Have the book and it is sitting by my bed, unread. I think I’m afraid of it. My closet isn’t that bad….it’s my office. BTW – love the new hangers. Good hangers make such a difference.

    1. Stacey says:

It’s a great book! I really like her way of thinking.

  15. This is awesome! That book is on my list to read! I have never heard of the vertical folding before, but that sounds interesting! My dresser drawers are not that deep so I wonder if that would help!

    1. Stacey says:

My daughter is always complaining about how shallow her drawers are – I think this will help! I haven’t changed her drawers over yet – she is away at college. But looking at mine makes me think it is a great idea for her shallow drawers.

  16. I love this calendar. I’ve been wanting to do the same. I have a huge closet of clothes that I need to go through. Every time I feel I go through it though I feel like I still have so much stuff left.

    1. Stacey says:

      I am taking baby steps.

  17. That’s a bit closet and lots of work, well done.

    1. Stacey says:

      Thanks!

  18. What a lovely large closet you have. I know you must smile every morning you enter your beautiful closet now.

    1. Stacey says:

      Yes, I do!

  19. I am so impressed with what you are doing! All my tries have ended up with another mess

    1. Stacey says:

      Thanks! I am determined.

  20. Is it weird that organizing relaxes me? Surely others feel the same right.

    1. Stacey says:

Totally! I think it is very calming! Well maybe not when the entire closet is laying all over the bedroom. But while putting it all away. 🙂

  21. We are a large family as well and have outgrown our house and re-organizing. A large task and I love your organizational skills and focus. Gives me hope because I get so far and then get exhausted!

    1. Stacey says:

Lol! The joys of a large household! I am determined. 🙂

  22. I am so glad to see this post as that book JUST came in the mail and I am so ready to dive into it. Good to know you like it. Your closet looks great and I dread doing mine – btw I have the same floor 3 drawer thing from IKEA in my closet – love it!

    1. Stacey says:

I just swapped some plastic bins out for the drawers sot make items easer to access. They hold my ski clothes and travel bags, but it is nice to be able to pull open the drawers.

  23. Debra says:

I really need to just bite the bullet and buy all new hangers. It drives me nuts to not have hangers that keep the clothes from slipping onto the floor!

    1. Stacey says:

Oh, these work wonderful! I have so many blouses that were constantly slipping.

  24. Your closet looks like mine does sometimes! I decided this year we would turn our hangers around to find out what we’re wearing, to clean it out. Now I’m just waiting for June to clean it out!! 🙂

    1. Stacey says:

I have never used the turn your hanger backwards trick but I bet it works to see what is really getting worn.

  25. Your coset looks so neat and tidy! We are currently purging and going through all of our belongings before we move next month. It is a big job but I am determined to be really organized from the start.

    1. Stacey says:

Moving is a great motivator! Theres is nothing like packing and then unpacking an item to then decide that you no longer want/need it.

  26. You have organized your closet well and is something that I have done recently do. It feels good to purge sometimes.

    1. Stacey says:

      It does feel good!

  27. I bow down to your discipline. I need to tackle my kitchen. Badly.

    1. Stacey says:

My kitchen is in a constant re-do!

  28. A closet full of the same hangers makes my heart happy. I use similar hangers and they save me so much room and it’s a lot easier to find what I’m looking for!

    1. Stacey says:

Oh, I love my new hangers!

  29. I made the mistake of emptying out my entire closet once. Lesson learned! Now when I need to do a clothing purge it happens a drawer, shelf or section of the closet at a time 🙂

    1. Stacey says:

It can get pretty crazy when you dump it all out! A bit overwhelming, too.

  30. This is so great!!! I get the “purge itch” all the time, so I’m looking forward to reading the book and getting more ideas on how to do it well!

    1. Stacey says:

I really got a lot out of the book!
